I was lucky enough to see the Paris show on Jan. 25, the first of what the
tee-shirts proclaim to be the "Look what I found in my Bierhoff" tour. It was
very enjoyable, Paul was very animated--really putting on "a show," notably in
"Liar's Bar"--and the whole group sounded tight and good.
The set list was extremely "Quench" heavy (they played 9 of its 13 songs) and
generally was tilted to newish material (only 3 songs from the first 3 CDs).
They opened with "Look What I Found in my Beer" and closed with "Your
Father and I." In between, they played the following, although I don't remember
the order and this is not an attempt to recreate it: "The Lure of the Sea,"
"Big Coin," "Dumb," "Perfect 10," "The Table,"
"Losing Things," and "How Long's a Tear Take to Dry," "Don't
Marry Her," "Rotterdam," "Have Fun" and "Liar's Bar,"
"Good as Gold," "Everybody's Talking at Me," "Pretenders to the
Throne," "One Last Love Song," "You Keep it All In,"
"36D" and "Old Red Eyes is Back."
Had it been entirely up to me, I would have had them play "Song for Whoever"
(which the crowd cried out for), "I Think the Answer's Yes" (nothing from
"Choke"! Waah!) or almost anything instead of "Everybody's Talking at
Me" (only 2 songs from "Miaow," and this was one???). But I understand they
are touring to support a new album, and maybe they don't want to do much from before
Jacqui joined the band.
Anyway, it was a good show, but those planning on seeing future dates should try to
familiarize themselves with "Quench."
